If you chew or smoke tobacco you need to stop now! Even though the antidepressant medication is the primary culprit to your sexual performance issues, tobacco is a close second in the blame game and we need to remove any habit that is preventing our sexual rehabilitation. When the ssri medication robbed me of my erections and libido I quit smoking & chewing immediately out of fear and it was a good call, within weeks my erection frequency and strength improved drastically! Listen to some points from the American Council on Science and Health & The Journal of Urology.
"Cigarette smoking damages sperm, affects hormone concentrations in men, and reduces blood flow to the penis. This reduction in blood flow can result in erectile dysfunction, or impotence. Recent experimental findings have also linked cigarette smoking in men with low sex drive and low sexual satisfaction."
A study published in the Journal of Urology found that smoking causes arterial damage that doubles a mans risk of total erectile dysfunction. The good news: If men quit in their 50's or earlier, we can usually reverse the damage.
Now we need to move on to the next culprit - alcohol. Most men will say I will do anything to get over this sexual dysfunction, but when you tell them they need to quit drinking many will more than likely look for an alternative and try to hold on to their booze. You don't have to quite cold turkey, but you shouldn't have more than 1 drink a day if you are serious about healing your erectile dysfunction and low libido.
I was drinking 3-10 drinks a day and initially when my post ssri sexual dysfunction struck. Also due to my fear of loosing my ability to obtain an erection I got my consumption down to 2-3 drinks a day for a couple months and I didn't see much of an improvement. When I quit drinking for 1 whole week was when I really began noticing a change in my impotence, I was waking up frequently at night with very hard erections. Whenever I decided to go out drinking with my friends my libido was much lower and my ability to maintain and erection was cut in half for almost the entire week. I would also like to state that alcohol is a depressant which i'm sure you all know and if you are attempting to overcome the black dog which also a culprit for impotence, alcohol is not helping you 1 bit so stop now or drastically reduce your intake and work towards eliminating the booze until you heal. If you must have one drink a day a glass of red wine is probably the best choice.
The following are some facts from TheHealthCareCenter.com about alcohol and its correlation to impotence.
"Extended alcohol abuse can harm the nervous system by affecting the connections between the brain and the genitals. When this otherwise normal process is disrupted, it can affect whether a man is able to have and hold an erection that is sufficient for intercourse."
Frequent alcohol abuse can even lead to a drop in hormone levels, and if testosterone levels decrease in men, sexual desire will be reduced as well. Alcohol abuse can also be the result of psychological issues like depression and anxiety, which can also affect sex drive and erectile dysfunction. When you add it all up, excessive drinking over the long term can lead to physical as well as psychological problems that will affect how well a man can perform sexually.
That's is for this post, by permanently eliminating tobacco from your lifestyle and drastically reducing or eliminating alcohol from your diet you will make noticeable gains in your sexual dysfunction that will be evident within 1-2 weeks.
Please do comment it will help everyone and do come back soon for more steps and insights into healing from POST ssri sexual dysfunction. Ill post as often as possible. Don't give up it takes some time and healthy steps on your part to improve.

Dean
I have seen lots of improvement myself with PSSD, one of the main things that holds me back from a more consistent improvement is alcohol. Like you said, going out drinking can result in low/none libido for almost a week after. It is very hard for me to avoid alcohol. All of my friends like to go out drinking and I feel if I quit drinking I will lose friends and good times. I am in college and it seems that alcohol is a way of life for a lot of kids out here. Before PSSD I had no problem with alcohol, I would love to go out drinking and have a good time. I now have been avoiding drinks, and libido is much better. It is only a matter of time though before I give in to alcohol (sadly) because I want to keep up with my social life. I'm guessing that drinking a lot less helps?
ReplyDeleteYes drinking a lot less does help improve your symptoms exponentially this is one of my top 5 items that you must adhere to if you want to heal from your ed. Things you can still do if you must drink are only drink when you go out & limit going out to 2-3 times a week. In addition when you go out don't have more than 3-4 drinks. If you're drinking more than that your body is never going to be in a state where it can heal your body/mind. Don't drink when your alone or during your regular week after work so if you drink when you do go out there are still 4 or more days during the week where you aren't drinking. In addition, doing compound anaerobic exercises such as squats, pull-ups & push-ups will boost your testosterone quite a bit which will help you out. When you drink a lot you usually don't sleep very well even if you get 8 full hrs of sleep, I recommend you drink copious amounts of water after your drinking sessions prior to sleeping if you must drink. You might also want to develop a circle of friends outside of your friends that don't drink or at least they don't drink all the time. Find some people to hang with that enjoy a sport or activity that you enjoy like cycling, running, yoga, whatever. Having more friends is always good anyways. Im having trouble getting my comment posted so im going to comment anonymous here and see if that works. Hope this helps. Dean
